Discrete Event Simulation Of An Oil & Gas Terminal

Data-driven experts, Proaim, tell Tank Storage Magazine how simulation models can be utilised in the tank storage industry... PROAIM has developed a detailed and discrete event simulation model of an oil and gas terminal and its shipping operations. This has been benchmarked against years of previous operations and experience and it now being used to validate the impact of proposed changes with the management. This has led to cost savings of $36 million (€32.9 million) in capex and opex. Case Study from Proaim  A UK-based crude oil and liquefied natural gas processing and export terminal was facing a decline in throughput from pipelines that were delivering crude from numerous offshore North Sea production facilities. It was assessing ways of reducing operating costs by semi-retiring a number of storage tanks and marine loading jetties. This had to be achieved without compromising throughput from the existing pipelines which would result in significant penalty and lost production costs. On benchmarking the discrete event simulation model it predicted deferred oil (volume losses), and when they would occur, within a few percent of what had actually happened in previous...
