The Port of Split, the only entry point for bitumen supply in Dalmatia, is investing €8 million in bitumen onshore storage tanks, making it the first port in the country to do so.
With the construction of modern onshore tanks, part of a project that includes extensive documentation and the eventual implementation of infrastructure over the next two years, the existing model of temporary storage of bitumen on barges will be replaced by the closed land systems. The project highlights the Port of Split’s aim to modernise its terminals, invest in safer transshipment technologies and develop closed cargo handling systems.
Filip Rogošić, director of the Port of Split, says: ‘The port is not an isolated system. It is part of the city, part of the community and part of the everyday life of the people who live next to it. That is why the issue of sustainability is not a question of trend or regulatory obligation for us, but a question of responsibility. With this investment, we are not only increasing operational efficiency, but also creating the preconditions to reduce the need for bitumen storage on barges to a minimum in the long term. By doing so, we further improve safety, preventively reduce potential risks to the environment and set new standards for the management of maritime space in Croatia.’
