SUSTAINABILITY: A LONG-TERM BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE

Øistein Jensen, chief sustainability officer at Odfjell, looks at the business challenges and opportunities of climate change The challenge is obvious. Sustainability is about meeting our current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. But already in July 2022, we will mark the Earth Overshoot Day, the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources exceeds what the planet can regenerate in that year. Climate change is undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges of our times. Global warming is caused by increased concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere, mainly from human activities, such as burning fossil fuels. To tackle climate change and its negative impacts, 197 countries adopted the Paris Agreement in December 2015. The agreement aims to substantially reduce global GHG emissions to limit the global temperature increase this century. We all have to do our part to achieve the aims of the Paris Agreement.
