Why the chemical industry needs to stay focussed on sustainability and flexibility in the supply chain The last few years have been exceptional for all industries and there have been many trends and changes. THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS The COVID-19 pandemic seems to have increased consumers’ concerns, not only for their own health, but the health of the planet. Increasing concern over carbon emissions has led to increased investment in energy efficiency and more use of renewable energy. Consumers are also placing a higher value on sustainability and are generally switching to products with a lower carbon footprint where possible. Research has shown that since COVID-19, over 60% of consumers have changed their shopping habits and over 90% of those say they will continue to shop that way post-pandemic. This includes buying locally and less use of plastic packaging. The automotive sector, a large market for chemical products, has already transformed significantly in the last few years, with tax breaks and subsidies further accelerating the production and sales of hybrid or alternatively powered cars.
