Uganda has begun construction of the Kampala Storage Terminal (KST) in Namwabula Estate-Nsujjumpolwe village, Kiringete subcounty, Mpigi District, with the ground-breaking ceremony led by President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday 17 September.
KST will have storage capacity for 320 million litres of petroleum and has construction costs of $300 million (€261 million). The Ugandan National Oil Authority plans to hold 51% interest in KST, with KST serving as a storage site for strategic Government reserves as well as for private oil marketing companies.
President Museveni says: ‘Our refinery will be one of the most profitable because, first of all, it’s far from the ocean and it does not have the transportation cost which imported oil has. When we refine our oil here, you don’t pay transit charges.’
