Washington State’s Department of Ecology (DOE) has handed down 35 sanctions to Nippon Dynawave Packaging (NDP) in connection with the deadly tank collapse at its Longview site in May 2026 that killed 11 people.
On 14 July 2026, DOE officials visited the site and conducted a Dangerous Waste Focused Compliance Inspection to assess the surrounding area for damage caused by the spilling of more than 500,000 gallons (1.9 million litres) of white liquor. The official report finds ‘NDP is a significant non-complier with the Dangerous Waste regulations’ and includes Notice of Violations for water quality and air quality. Nippon now has 30 days to complete the corrective actions listed in the report; failure to do so will lead to fines of up to $10,000 (€8,577) a day.
Casey Sixkiller, director of the Department of Ecology, states: ‘This event was devastating for the Longview community, and the release of chemicals reached nearby waterways and the Columbia River. Issuing these environmental violations is an initial step toward accounting for the impacts of this tragedy.’
Clean up efforts at the site began last week.
