A ‘computer glitch’ has been blamed for causing the leaking of over 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel from Equinix Data Center’s storage tank in Secaucus, NJ, US. The leak was reported on Friday 11 September 2026, and as of Monday 14 September 2026, the state’s Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has confirmed it is unknown how many gallons made it to Anderson Creek – a tributary of the Hackensack River.
Secaucus Fire Department responded on Friday, with the NJDEP and Hudson Regional Health Commission also notified. Cleanup crews deployed containment barriers and vacuum trucks to remove the spilled diesel from the Creek; NJDEP confirmed cleanup is still ongoing.
Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli spoke to NBC New York: ‘This should never have happened, and any such incident is extremely upsetting, to say the least. I am not an environmental expert, but I know that incidents such as these don’t have a good outcome if they are not taken care of properly. NJDEP has assured us that because it was reported immediately and containment and clean-up crews started work right away, the diesel was contained in the creek and did not make it to the Hackensack River.’
