Uniper’s Connah’s Quay low carbon power project achieves key milestone with the appointment of front-end engineering design (FEED) contractors.
The contracts have been awarded to Technip Energies and Worley, taking the project to the next phase in its proposal for a new CCGT power station with carbon capture at our Connah’s Quay site in Clwyd, Wales.
The FEED phase started at the end of December 2024, and is expected to take around a year to complete. The two contractors will design and submit development plans and compete to be the final contractor for an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build the plant.
The proposed power station, Connah’s Quay low carbon power, could provide around 1.1GW, and up to a maximum of 1.38GW of low carbon power, developed in two phases. From completion of phase one, the project could supply enough electricity to power the equivalent of up to 1.4 million homes a year. Phase one could potentially be operational by 2030.
Formal statutory consultation for the proposed new power station closed mid-November, and a development consent order (DCO) application is currently being prepared and due to be submitted this year.
