Global project developer, engineering construction and technology solutions provider, Alfanar, has confirmed that its Lighthouse Green Fuels (LGF) SAF project will move to a larger site in Teesside, UK. During a keynote to aviation leaders at the Airlines 2025 conference in London, UK country head of Alfanar Noaman Al Adhami also unveiled a new brand and website for LGF – LGF Projects Ltd – which is wholly owned by Alfanar.
The £2 billion (€2.28 billion) LGF project will convert 1.5 million tonnes of sustainably sourced biomass feedstocks – including forestry, sawmill, and agricultural residues in line with the UK SAF Mandate – into more than 180 million litres of second-generation SAF, offsetting the equivalent carbon emissions of 4,500 transatlantic flights from London to New York.
The new Seal Sands site will make use of the former INEOS Nitriles facility, just 500 metres from the previous Billingham location. It offers closer access to critical infrastructure, including rail and shipping links, as well as carbon capture and storage infrastructure. The site would be capable of enabling the entire conversion process, from feedstock pre-treatment to storage.
Al Adhami, says: ‘The move to our new site means we are now even better placed to become a global leader in sustainable aviation fuel production. Our project was already the most advanced dedicated SAF project in the UK, and the largest of its kind anywhere in the world. This relocation drives further operational and supply chain efficiencies and means we are better placed to increase production capacity in the future once the first phase of the project is underway.’
With the additional CCS capabilities, LGF would be able to produce SAF with a 200% lifecycle emissions reduction compared to conventional jet fuel – enough to meet 11% of the UK’s 2030 SAF Mandate.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, shared the news in a post on LinkedIn, saying: ‘Investments like this show [Teesside is] leading the way yet again, and proves we’ve got the people, the skills, and the determination to deliver world-class projects right here.’
