Shell has announced it will not be proceeding with the construction of a biofuels plant at its Pernis site in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Richard Zwinkels, general manager for Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam said on LinkedIn: ‘Market dynamics and expected construction costs ultimately make the project insufficiently competitive for us to meet our customers’ demand for affordable biofuels. Entrepreneurship is also: daring to stop when circumstances change. And then don’t throw in the towel, but look ahead.’

Shell will continue to provide its customers with biofuels through its existing trading business. ‘We will continue the energy transition at our factories unabated. Because our mission remains intact: to make Pernis produce ever cleaner – with smart investments in energy efficiency, electrification, and CO₂ reduction,’ says Zwinkels.
