Stolthaven’s Houston (USA) terminal has been working with XL Batteries to commission the company’s first pilot project, using organic flow batteries to store energy. In a post on LinkedIn, XL Batteries says: ‘Our team is rethinking grid-scale storage by harnessing abundant organic chemistry and modular design to build safer, more durable, and capital-efficient solutions for the energy transition — and we’re just getting started.’

XL Batteries is repurposing existing infrastructure to deploy ultra-low-cost, long-duration energy storage, powered by its proprietary organic flow battery.

Stolthaven’s president, Guy Bessant, was in Houston recently and saw the newly installed battery. Bessant comments: ‘Long-term energy storage is critical for the global transition to greener energy alternatives. This partnership brings together XL Batteries’ expertise and innovations in flow battery technology and Stolthaven Terminals’ global presence in providing bulk liquid services.’

In his own LinkedIn post, Bessant adds: ‘The most recent outlook report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) only supports that as the world’s demand for energy increases that we will need a mix of solutions and that specifically for renewables it is imperative for them to be connected with long duration energy storage such as the projects which Stolthaven is working on.’
