After securing EU funding for SaltHy, Gunnar Assmann, project leader of hydrogen storage at Storengy Deutschland, explains why now is the right time to invest in hydrogen infrastructure
SaltHy is a flagship hydrogen storage project, developed and initiated by Storengy Deutschland and located in Harsefeld, Lower Saxony, Germany. ‘Storengy aims to develop one of Germany’s first large-scale underground hydrogen storage facilities,’ explains Gunnar Assmann, project leader of hydrogen storage at Storengy Deutschland. ‘SaltHy is designed to support the hydrogen market ramp-up in Germany and Europe by providing seasonal storage capacity and grid flexibility,’ he adds.
The project will initially create two new caverns, each with a working gas volume of approximately 7,000 tonnes. The first cavern is scheduled to be operational by 2032, with the second following in 2034. ‘In a later phase, the existing salt caverns currently used for natural gas storage will be repurposed for hydrogen,’ says Assmann.
So why now? ‘Europe is undergoing a rapid energy transition, with hydrogen playing a central role in decarbonising industry, transport, and power generation,’ says...
