In an exclusive interview with Tank Storage Magazine, director innovation at Uniper, Arne Hauner looks into how flow batteries are enhancing terminals
This Summer, Uniper took the first step in a planned collaboration with Jena Flow Batteries, an innovative company specialising in metal-free organic flow batteries. The aim is to explore and scale long-duration energy storage, a key enabler of a renewable energy system.
Over the course of this testing and deployment phase, Uniper will evaluate the use of this promising battery technology at one of its sites to see how it performs in real-world conditions. The goal, according to director innovation, Arne Hauner, is to be a pioneer in deploying and validating the use of this next-generation, long-duration energy storage solution. ‘By partnering with Jena Flow Batteries and its parent company Suqian Time Energy Storage, we aim to provide the full value chain – from production to deployment – with a sustainable, scalable storage system that can support Uniper’s decarbonisation and flexibility strategies,’ he says.
Drawing on Uniper’s extensive experience from previous innovation projects – especially in hydrogen,...
