CB&I has filled its large-scale liquid hydrogen (LH2) storage tank at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center Hydrogen Test Facility (HTF) for the first time, using non-vacuum insulation technology. The technology project is led by CB&I, Shell, NASA, GenH2 and the University of Houston to develop and validate affordable LH2 storage solutions.
CB&I’s 20m3 tank has been integrated into the HTF site; it triples the total LH2 storage capacity and will only need to be refilled once a day. The next stage of the project is to evaluate the performance of the non-vacuum insulation system to generate supportive data for commercialisation.
Yogesh Meher, vice president of Engineering at CB&I, states: ‘The successful first fill of our demonstration tank marks an important step toward validating a more cost-effective approach to large-scale LH2 storage. By demonstrating this technology under real operating conditions at NASA’s HTF, we are accelerating the path to commercial deployment and helping enable the hydrogen economy at scale.’
