A conditional Final Investment Decision (cFID) has been taken for the extension of EemsEnergyTerminal in Eemshaven, Groningen, the Netherlands, marking a major milestone in the continuation of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure. This decision offers shareholders Gasunie and Vopak a next step towards a definitive FID, which is now subject to obtaining the necessary permits.
EemsEnergyTerminal has concluded contracts with customers who will supply LNG to the terminal for the period 2028-2036. The Dutch government has also provided EemsEnergyTerminal with a guarantee to cover part of the remaining project risks, ensuring the extension of the terminal.
EemsEnergyTerminal has been operational since September 2022, with an original contract of five years. It currently has a capacity of 8 billion m3, and the extension intends to enable the import of 8.6 billion m3 of natural gas per year, approximately 25% of the annual Dutch gas demand.
