Maria Ciliberti, president Vopak US and Canada says: ‘Vopak North America’s 50-year journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and our unwavering commitment to providing safe and sustainable storage solutions. We are proud of our history and excited for the future as we continue to shape the industry and support the evolving needs of our customers.’

Vopak North America’s roots trace back to Paktank Gulf Coast when it was incorporated on December 4, 1975, in response to the growing demand for reliable and efficient bulk liquid storage in the petrochemical and oil industries. By the 1970s, Paktank Gulf Coast had established a strong presence along the US Gulf Coast, particularly in the Houston Ship Channel, becoming a key player in the region’s thriving energy sector.

A defining milestone came in 1999 when the company became part of Royal Vopak, following the merger of two Dutch logistics firms, Van Ommeren and Pakhoed. This consolidation created the world’s largest independent tank storage provider and positioned Vopak North America for accelerated growth and global connectivity.

Throughout the early 2000s, Vopak North America embarked on a robust expansion strategy, acquiring new terminals, increasing storage capacity, and integrating cutting-edge technology. The company modernised its infrastructure, implementing automation, digital monitoring systems, and enhanced safety protocols to optimise efficiency and reduce risks.

Recognising the importance of environmental responsibility, Vopak North America has continuously invested in sustainability initiatives. From emissions control improvements to the adoption of alternative energy solutions, the company has been at the forefront of industry-wide efforts to reduce environmental impact.

In recent years, Vopak North America has expanded its focus beyond traditional energy storage, embracing the transition to renewable energy. The company now plays a pivotal role in storing and handling hydrogen, ammonia, and liquefied natural gas (LNG), supporting the global shift towards cleaner energy solutions. Digitalisation initiatives, including real-time monitoring and AI-driven predictive maintenance, further enhance operational efficiency and safety.
