Challenges for process safety in a post-pandemic world

Founded in 2002, Cogent Skills was formed as the UK’s skill support entity for the science and technology sectors. At Hazards33, Neil Smith and Justine Fosh from Cogent Skills looked at how the industry can improve skills and safety. Fosh recognised that different companies need to form their own workstreams based on capacity and capability within teams. This means a focus on competence within the business, and that it can keep up with its output. But it’s not just up to individual businesses; it also means looking at the regulator to help spot gaps in safety management. If all chemical businesses collaborate with the regulator, a strong, data-based strategy can be developed. The COMAH Strategic Forum was established in 2013 for collaboration between the chemical industry and regulators. The forum aims to enhance leadership and management of major accident hazards. As such, it provides a platform for strategic discussions, promotes continuous development and provides access to resources.
