Europe is going through a period of historic transformation in the energy sector that will change the world of energy as we know it today. Decarbonisation and energy transition strategies, energy costs and the increase in renewable energy production are just some of the factors that explain this transformation. The year 2025 was not good for the European energy sector. There were several announcements of plant closures in countries such as Germany and Italy, and the continent suffered higher energy and raw material costs compared to other areas of the world, especially the USA, China and the Middle East.
The Mediterranean is not immune to this situation, although the data points to a more stable situation than in other areas of central and northern Europe. The volumes of bulk liquid traffic in Spain have remained fairly constant, as is shown by the data published for 2025 by Puertos del Estado, the Spanish state ports authority.
