Port of Amsterdam and Firan Waterstof announce next phase of regional hydrogen network

The Port of Amsterdam and Firan Waterstof sign agreements for the next phase of H2avennet at the H2A Symposium, BIMHUIS Amsterdam, signalling both companies’ commitment to preparing the project for realisation.

H2avennet is the intended regional hydrogen network for the Amsterdam port area, offering an alternative energy system alongside the current electricity and natural gas grid. As part of the agreement, the Port of Amsterdam will focus on connecting parties and enabling infrastructure in the port area, while Firan Waterstof develops and manages the hydrogen network between producers and customers.

Gert-Jan Nieuwenhuizen, executive director of New Business, Port of Amsterdam, comments: ‘H2avennet focuses on the port area of Amsterdam, where many companies have a large energy need. Sustainability is often complex there due to the demand for high temperatures in production processes. Hydrogen offers an important alternative to fossil fuels for these companies. With H2avennet, Port of Amsterdam and Firan Hydrogen give industrial users in the area access to hydrogen through an open and scalable infrastructure.’

Rob van der Horst, on behalf of Firan Waterstof, part of Alliander Next Grid, says: ‘H2avennet is important because it shows what the future of hydrogen in the Netherlands could look like: regionally organised, open to multiple parties and built in close collaboration between public and private partners. What we are developing here gives direction to the next hydrogen networks in the Netherlands.’
