PetroChina International and Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority met at the Red Sea World Centre to discuss plans for a 1,550km oil pipeline that would connect South Sudan to Djibouti’s Red Rea ports through Ethiopia. The meeting included chairman of the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority and a senior delegation from PetroChina International (Middle East), led by the company’s deputy general manager, Hu Weiqiang.
Along with the pipeline, a 300,000m3 petroleum storage facility could be developed in Djibouti’s Damerjog industrial zone, where Damerjog Liquid Bulk Port would serve as the main export terminal for South Sudanese crude oil.
According to Ethiopian business newspaper Capital Ethiopia, the aim of the development would be to ‘diversify South Sudan’s access to international oil markets while expanding Djibouti’s petroleum storage and transport infrastructure.’
